Education Reform Widely Debated (2/2005)-EN

On 30 January 2005, the President of the Republic of Cyprus officially launched a public dialogue on reforming the education system. The overall aim is to reach the widest possible agreement on the necessary structural reforms. The discussions will take as their basis a report prepared in August 2004 by a team of seven prominent experts appointed by the Council of Ministers.

This report suggests a series of priorities for reform, covering the entire education system. One of these is to create post-secondary vocational training Institutions and a new Centre for Educational Research and Evaluation. It is also proposed to restructure the pre-service training programme for teachers in secondary education and to develop a new assessment scheme for teachers. Finally, the Ministry of Education and Culture is itself to be restructured.

Responsibility for monitoring the dialogue has been assigned to a newly created body, the Education Council. The dialogue will be carried out via four committees, working in parallel on various issues. The committees must submit detailed action plans to the Education Council within three months.
