Employment forecasts in Cyprus 2014-2024 (4/2015)

The provision of long-term employment forecasts in sectors of economic activity and occupations is an established activity of the Human Resource Development Authority of Cyprus (HRDA).

The Research and Planning Directorate of the HRDA provides 10-year employment forecasts on a regular basis every 2 to 3 years. The HRDA recently published a research study providing forecasts of employment needs in Cyprus for the period 2014-2024 which incorporate the effects of the economic crisis. This is the latest of a series of research studies providing analyses for the labour market in Cyprus. The study provides forecasts of employment, expansion and replacement demand in 52 sectors of economic activity and 309 occupations in Cyprus for the period 2014-2024.

Total employment for the period 2014-2024 is expected to exhibit an upward trend, recovering gradually from the effects of the economic crisis. From 361.327 persons in 2014, it is estimated that it will reach 413.888 persons in 2024. The average annual increase of employment during the period 2014-2024 will reach 5.256 persons or 1,4%. The estimated growth rates will be lower than the ones exhibited during the period 2000-2008 (3,4% per year).

The study has shown that total employment demand for the period 2014-2024 will reach 12.966 persons or 3,4% annually compared to 3.752 persons or 0,9% annually during the period 2009-2014. Expansion demand is expected to reach 5.256 persons or 1,4% per year and replacement demand will sum up to 7.740 persons or 2,0% per year.

The biggest increases in employment are expected in the Tertiary Sector of the Cyprus economy.
